Other Ways to Volunteer

Adopt-a-Room
Each year, over 300 women and children come to Community Connections seeking help after a hardship of some sort.  When they arrive – either from other shelters, Hubbard House or from the streets, they usually just have the clothes on their backs.  While we can provide them with a room, with clothes, with the security they hunger for and with a chance for a new life, we cannot provide them with the basic items they need to make their new ‘home’ feel like a ‘home’.  Our Adopt a Room program was designed to bring volunteers into our facility to create a “home” environment for the women entering our program.  Items such as sheets, pillows, blankets, towels and washcloths, personal toiletry items, a table lamp and an alarm clock make all the difference in the world to a woman who enters our facility with nothing but the clothes on her back.

Cooking for a Cause!
Like to cook?  Like to meet new people?  Ever feel like working with people less fortunate than you?  Give Community Connections a call!  We are always looking for a group of people to come and cook (or provide) dinner for our clients.  Dinners usually consist of spaghetti/bread/salad, etc. and the clients spend time with the "chefs".  We would LOVE to have you!

Collections! Collections! Collections!
Do you have a talent for asking people to give you something for a charity?  Something so simple as a pack of pencils? Or even a couple of quarters?  Community Connections has several desperately needed items you could collect for us if you would like to do a project, but just don't have a lot of extra time.  From laundry money (quarters) to linens to books, the list is never-ending.  Call our Volunteer Coordinator for more information today!

Who Says It’s Trash?
In our daycare, we can take anything and make it into an art project!  Packing peanuts become garland, paper plates become Thanksgiving Turkeys, Coke bottles (round ones) become Christmas ornaments - nothing is wasted!

The daycare starts its year off on a $75,000 planned deficit and can use anything given to them to make up for that deficit.  Please think about Community Connections before you throw anything you thing is garbage away.

Sponsor a Child for a Family in Need
Many mothers come into our facility with nothing, Although they are required to have a job, they have no means to pay for thier child to attend daycare - or for that matter PAY for daycare.  Community Connections provides daycare for Jacksonville's homeless children.  That being said, we begin our fiscal year on a $75,000 planned deficit.

Our aim with this project is to help our mother's pay for daycare for thier children, while in turn helping Community Connections' deficit to not be increased.

Mother’s Day Wishes
What do you get for Mother's Day or get for your mother on Mother’s Day?  Do you get [her]Roses? Chocolate? Candy? Cards?  Imagine living in a shelter - just a mother with her children...no husband, no other family to speak of...and Mother's Day rolls around.  There is nothing there for you...except you, your child and a 20 x 20 room.  Think maybe we could change that by doing something for our mothers?  Maybe candy? Cards? Chocolate? Roses?  A little something to make them feel special?  The goal of this project is to make the ladies living in the Florence N. Davis Center feel a sense of caring in what can sometimes feel like a hopeless situation for them.

Shamu – HERE WE COME!
The kids who attend our After School program have asked to go to Sea World!  Some of our children have never been to places as simple as the mall, much less out of the city and to a theme park!  Here's the problem: We don't have the budget to send them. Can you help us make this trip?  It’s easier than you might think.

Time for Back to School!
It's time to go back to school and Community Connections is in need of your help to make sure our children have all the items they need!  Each year, students are given a list of supplies that they need for school - this includes pens, pencils, paper, spiral notebooks, rulers, graph paper, folders, index cards and tape - to name a few things; however, we are dependent upon donations to be able to provide these things. Can you help collect them and put them together for our 1,100 children?
