Fallen Hero Gives Back to Community
WHAT: Community Connections has been chosen to be the recipient of a cash gift and household goods from the estate of Major Alan Greg Rogers, who died on January 27 in Iraq when the Humvee in which he was riding was hit by a roadside bomb. This was his 3rd Middle East mission.
WHO: Major Rogers was born in New York City, where as an infant he was left at the NYC Foundling Center, where he stayed until he was adopted at age 3. He and his adoptive family moved to Hampton, Florida where he grew up.
Major Rogers was close friends with Theresa Bennett, granddaughter of former Representative Charles Bennett who served this congressional district for 44 years, and her husband Shay Hill. Ms. Bennett has been a volunteer with Community Connections through the Junior League’s Kids in the Kitchen Program. When she and her husband were notified that they were to be the Trustees of Major Rogers’ estate, they felt it appropriate to choose Community Connections for its profoundly critical work with children from low income families. Major Rogers held a BS from UF, and two Masters, one in Public Policy from Georgetown University.
Stationed at the Pentagon, Major Rogers volunteered to go to Iraq because he believed that he could assist the Iraqi people through the transition to having an independent government.
WHEN: A check will be presented to Community Connections on July 3rd at 1:00 P.M.
WHERE: at our Administrative Offices at 327 E. Duval Street.
